# Once You Know the Scales

> A brand that feels like you starts underneath the look. Once the bones carry the business, the artist in you gets to come back to the front.

Peru has been home to my Side Quests since 2019.

The Sacred Valley. Lake Titicaca. Machu Picchu. Years of learning the route, the rhythm of the days and what makes one journey through those mountains different from all the others.

The next one is forming now, with my friend Simon and his team on the ground. Putting the itinerary together has been some of the most fun I've had all year. Every piece of it is rooted in Aliveness.

It also took time. Sequencing the trip. Shaping how it's different. Then a strategy brief on top of that. Structure, all of it.

The confidence of that structure feels really good. Solid. Dependable. Something I can rely on.

And with those bones in place, I got to build the page. The beauty. The aesthetic. The vibe. The story.

Once you understand the scales, you can improvise. That's where the rich textures come into play.

Keep an eye out. More about Peru coming very soon, along with a playful twist on the route I'm keeping to myself for now.

People who build businesses ask me some version of the same question. How do I create a brand that feels like me, rather than one more copy of the big firms in my field?

It's easy to hear that as a question about the look. The answer starts underneath it.

Structure is structure. Much of it is nearly universal in business. A firm of five hundred and a team of one both need a vision, a mission and a clear promise to the people they serve. The application is where it becomes yours: your industry, your size, your goals, where you are right now. It starts with [what game of business you want to play](https://www.lanebelone.com/blog/f/what-game-of-business-do-you-want-to-play).

Look at it only through the big firm's eyes and it's easy to get lost competing. Trying to be somebody else.

Years ago I ran branding sessions. Vision, mission, value proposition and the complementary elements to provide clarity. Each one was a set of questions, digging deeper and deeper until we reached the core and the essence of what someone was doing. From there, we could articulate it.

A good branding kit works the same way. Its structure asks the best questions, so you can look within yourself and find the authentic answer.

That's where it takes a little time.

Many of the ideas we hold about how a business should look were borrowed. Some were given to us. Some were scripted for us to adhere to. When a story about who we are gets wrapped around them, they're hard to tell apart from the real thing.

When the aesthetic is the primary thing, or the only thing, it's often a [conditioned performance](https://www.infinitegameos.io/concepts/conditioned-vs-authentic-identity). The "character" playing a part. The authentic expression grows from a strong foundation and the depth of why you're doing what you're doing.

There's nuance here. I flow with the creative and the artistic often, sometimes more than I should. Sometimes the artistic expression is the point.

More often, in the story of a life or a business, the useful bones come first and the "artistic" follows. Five hours on the color of a logo, when four and a half of them could go toward something that turns a flywheel in your business.

The spine is what lets us stand and move through this world. Everything around it, the muscles and the ligaments, is there to protect it. The core grows stronger every time you go out and build something.

The bones of a business are its systems.

A founder builds the systems and the culture until the team knows where the company is heading and moves with its own sense of agency. A flywheel, an employee, an AI agent. The creator stays close to each one for a while. What's working. What needs refining, calibrating, amplifying because it's working so well. How to document it. How to make sure the [structure holds](https://www.infinitegameos.io/concepts/held-by-structure).

Then you can take a week off and live your life. Or turn toward another part of the business.

You come back and the flywheel is working. The employee is innovating. The agent is bringing fresh results and ideas.

The creator moves fluidly through the business, the ecosystem and the life. The energy, the attention and the awareness go to whatever feels like the next thing. Very often, that's the artistry.

That's what [The Alive Business](https://www.sidequesthq.co/products/the-alive-business) is for. Building the bones of a business so it carries itself. Then the artist in you gets to come back to the front.

What's the authentic fire moving through you right now?

It may have been subtly churning within for a while. Looked over, simply because that's what happened.

Welcome the direction the fire wants to go. Business. Life. The design of your days. Your relationships.

Mine is currently Peru. I can't wait to share it with you. And who knows what next week's fire will look and feel like.
